The Classical Age of Music

During the Baroque Age, music had been polyphonic, with more than one melody at the same time. Classical music became more homophonic, meaning that it often had only one main melody, with an accompaniment of chords. This style of music was easier to listen to, and far easier to remember! In the videos below, you will hear examples of these singable tunes that are still very popular today. You have probably already heard some of them!

During this time in music history, many of the instruments in the woodwind family (clarinet, flute, horns, oboe, etc.) were greatly improved, and soon the orchestra grew to include them. The piano, which had been invented around 1700 A.D., was also made stronger and faster.
